Aims

The Postgraduate Certificate in Obesity Care and Management aims to:

  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills to engage positively in a wide spectrum of activities in the prevention and management of obesity and related clinical consequences
  • Provide a curriculum that will produce critical, effective and reflective practitioners.

  • Encourage students to be proactive in effecting changes that will benefit those with obesity
  • Provide opportunities for debating the issues concerning social, political, organizational, cultural and environmental issues in relation to obesity.
  • Ensure a compassionate approach to dealing with those requiring obesity care.

Course Structure

To be awarded the Diploma, you first have to complete the PG Cert, then study three further 20-credit, 12-week modules. These modules can be studied in any order. The modules are:

  • Paediatric obesity
  • Nutritional approaches to obesity
  • Obesity and reproductive health

Learning Strategy

The teaching and learning pattern on the course is deliberately varied. Methods of delivery include: audio and visual presentations involving interactive e-learning units and presentations, discussion forums and tutorials.

Students learn through engaging in critical reflective practice on cases and course material that is recorded in their Student Log; Discussion Forums; critiquing articles and web based sources of information; quizzes to assess knowledge and understanding of key papers; casework; group work; and research-based assignments.

Assessment

There are three types of tasks involved in the module assessment – Student Log tasks (reflective practice and case studies), peer-peer discussions and formal written assignments. All work submitted is reviewed by the tutor to monitor progress and provide feedback to support learning and development.

Assessment tasks can be formative – feedback provided but no mark awarded – or summative – feedback provided and a mark awarded. The marks awarded for the summative assessments determine the overall grade for the module.

Course Fees

Each 20 credit module carries a fee of £1185. The course total fee is £7,110
