It has been known for some time that increased levels of stress can have many harmful effects on the body, one of which is weight gain.
Cortisol is known as the ‘stress hormone’ and is released by our bodies during periods of stress. It acts by increasing our appetite and driving cravings for food. Further to this, insulin levels increase after cortisol is released, driving sugar into storage; this lowers our blood sugar and therefore we crave sweeter foods.
