Weight bias and stigmatisation is becoming more common in the work, home and clinical environment. It is viewed by some, unfortunately, to be a necessary social pressure in order to bring about behavioural changes.
The rates of obesity are rising; with evidence supporting that obesity is actually exacerbated when the individual suffers weight bias and social stigma. The psychological well-being of the patient is affected, bringing into question whether stigmatisation is not only ineffective, but also harmful to the public.
