Hon. Assoc. Prof. Welbourn has been a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon since 1998. His areas of interest include bariatric / metabolic surgery and laparoscopic surgery.

He is one of the most well-known bariatric surgeons in the UK and was President of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), founder of the UK National Bariatric Surgery Registry, and lead surgeon on the NIHR-funded By-Band-Sleeve RCT.
