Behaviour Change Skills

The missing piece between clinical advice and patient action

Your patients understand what they need to do. The question is why it so rarely translates into sustained action.
Traditional training equips you to diagnose and treat. Behaviour change skills equip you to help patients actually follow through.

What Are Behaviour Change Skills?

Behaviour change skills are evidence-based techniques from psychology and behavioural science: learnable competencies that move you beyond advice-giving.

Person-centred communication

Patients feel heard, not lectured

Motivational interviewing

Help patients find their own reasons to change

Cognitive behavioural techniques

Break the patterns that derail progress

Why These Skills Matter

For the conditions that fill most clinics, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, the outcome turns on what the patient does once the appointment is over.

But helping a patient change is not a single skill, it is a sequence, and the order is everything. Get it wrong and even good advice goes nowhere; get it right and change has somewhere to take hold.

Careers & Employability

Behaviour change skills travel with you. Unlike training tied to one condition or setting, motivational interviewing, person-centred communication and cognitive behavioural techniques apply in every patient-facing role you will ever hold.
They are also becoming a defined requirement, not just a nice-to-have. NHS health and wellbeing coaches and social prescribing link workers are built around these skills rather than clinical treatment, and NHS England’s guidance names motivational interviewing among the techniques those roles rely on. Developing them now is both immediately useful and a route into a growing part of the workforce.
