Obesity Care

From core clinical skill to specialist expertise

Almost two in three adults are overweight or living with obesity (Health Survey for England, 2024), and most clinicians see them every week.

Obesity care is no longer a specialist concern. It has become a core clinical skill, and one of the most valuable a clinician can develop today.

What Is Obesity Care?

Obesity care spans the knowledge and skills to assess, manage and support patients living with obesity as a chronic disease.

Patient assessment

Assess obesity as the complex, chronic condition it is, looking beyond BMI to the full clinical picture.

Evidence-based management

Match treatment to the patient using approaches grounded in current evidence, not generic advice.

Compassionate communication

Recognise and counter weight stigma, and support patients in a way that builds trust rather than shame.

Why Obesity Care Matters

Obesity is a chronic disease. It sits at the intersection of biology, behaviour, psychology and environment. It is linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and reduced life expectancy, touching almost every part of healthcare.

More than 890 million adults are living with obesity globally (World Health Organization, 2024). Managing it well calls for more than general advice. It requires a real understanding of the condition and the practical skills to deliver care.

Your Professional Development

New, more effective treatments and updated NICE guidance have raised what practitioners are expected to know about obesity. The basics no longer cover it. The right training closes that gap.
CCH courses are CPD-accredited, so the time you invest counts towards your appraisal and revalidation as well as your own practice.

How To Develop Your Obesity Care Expertise

CCH offers two routes into obesity care:

CPD-on-demand courses – evidence-based training you can apply straight away, for practitioners adding obesity care to their existing work.
Postgraduate modules – academic and critical, for those who want to examine the research and guidelines at postgraduate depth.

Not Sure Where To Start?

For most practitioners, CPD-on-demand is the place to begin. Choose the one closest to the patients you see, and you can put it to work in your next clinic.
The postgraduate modules ask more of you: more time, and a deeper, more questioning approach to the evidence. They suit practitioners who want to study the field in greater depth.
