Haringey Obesity Alliance ‘One Year On’
On Tuesday 18 July 2016, Dr Laura Benzonana attended the 2nd Annual Haringey Obesity Alliance event: ‘One Year On’.
The Haringey Obesity Alliance is a group of local organisations committed to working together to reduce obesity.
Comprised of local schools, the NHS, businesses and the voluntary sector, the Haringey Obesity Alliance is helping to make Haringey a healthier place where fewer people are overweight or obese.
Chaired by Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, the Alliance aims to coordinate efforts to fight obesity to ensure it has the greatest possible impact locally.
The event outlined the great work being carried out by many members of the Alliance such as Streetzahead, a charity that provides 20-minute dance classes for school children, and Homes for Haringey, an organisation involved in removing the ‘No Ball Games’ signs from Haringey in order to encourage children to play outside. Smarter Travel, a part a Haringey Council, has initiated the walking for health programme, and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation are providing weight management through the Shape up with Spurs programme.
CCH are proud to be a part of the Alliance and have pledged to provide a number of Professional Short Courses to educate nurses in the Haringey community.

On Monday 11 July 2016 Dr Laura Benzonana and Mrs Victoria Crown attended a meeting held by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Adult and Childhood Obesity at the Palace of Westminster. The meeting was chaired by Maggie Throup MP and co-chaired by John McNally MP.
The aim of the APPG is to bring together experts and influencers to agree and deliver powerful, practical and achievable solutions to obesity. The APPG also aims to oversee government progress; as well as review and assess government policy on obesity.
CCH are delighted to be a part of this group and were pleased to join the meeting in Westminster on Monday. There were some excellent talks by Dr Harry Rutter of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Dr Rachel Batterham and Dr Jude Oben, both from UCL. Following the talks, there was a lively debate among the collection of experts, MPs, members of the public and health professionals.
This is an excellent forum for discussion, and we look forward to the next meeting in October.
“My vision is for the all-party group to become a forum for lively discussion of practical ways in which we can support people both to live healthier lives themselves and to help their children grow up healthy”.
Maggie Throup MP, House of Commons January 21 2016

- Did you know that by studying online you can dip in and out as you please; viewing lectures during your lunch break; while cooking; during your commute or before you go to sleep?
- Our modules run 3 times a year, and you do not have to commit to more than 12 weeks at any one time
- You can decide how many modules you complete and which qualification you achieve as you go along
I wanted to attain a qualification that would help me secure employment in the field of obesity management. The College of Contemporary Health was the only institution able to offer me the depth of course that I was looking for as well as the ability to study at a distance.
Nursing Services Manager
- With online study at CCH most of your resources are on our CCH-X learning platform significantly reducing the cost of any necessary textbooks
- By studying anywhere you please you do not have to spend any money on commuting, accommodation, or even little things, such as your coffee

Registered General Nurse
- Did you know that part of your weekly activities involve you posting and discussing aspects of the course on a group discussion forum?
- You are also able to communicate with your classmates through email and messaging as well as join them online for academic tutorials
The course has been extremely interesting. A lot of work has clearly been put in to making it informative, challenging and thought provoking. The online format works well for me as I can fit my studies in around my other commitments. The use of the discussion forums has allowed me to have interactions with other students and get their opinions and feedback. It is valuable that all the students come from different sectors, so that we get a more holistic view of obesity care. It also means that even though you are studying alone, you feel as though you are part of a class.

- While studying with CCH, you will have the support of a dedicated tutor throughout your studies
- Your tutor is there to answer any questions, offer you online tutorials and will also monitor your progress throughout the course motivating you throughout each module

Meeting our graduates
Whenever one of our students completes their course, we always like to ask of the thoughts and experience with the delivery and content of them as one of our goals is to continually ensure that our teaching methods achieve their goals.
Why did you choose to study the Postgraduate Certificate in Obesity Care at CCH?
I had been interested in improving my knowledge in obesity care whilst working in the field. The head of nursing at the hospital l worked at sent the course prospectus by e-mail and it was everything l was looking for.”
How did you find the online learning?
It was ‘better’ than l thought it would be regarding access to tutors etc. The tutors are very supportive and want you to succeed. The content of the course is laid out in a way that would suit everyone’s style of learning. The information given and what is expected of you is explicit.”
What was the highlight of the course?
Completing it!!! Seriously though, for me it was getting positive feedback as there were times when l realised that there was so much l didn’t know. It makes you want to learn more.”
Will this course improve your employment prospects?
During the course l have changed jobs from a ward manager to a Bariatric Nurse Specialist. My passion in obesity care was primarily in post- operative care for the patient. Now l am able to support the patient throughout their surgical experience for 2 years. The course has given me greater depth of knowledge to support this role.”
What advice would you give to a student considering this course?
I would stress the importance to keep ‘on top’ of their studying. If possible study each night to maintain this, as there are always things which come along to ‘knock you off track’. Don’t lose hope if you feel you are out of your depth. Ask for help as your tutor is there to support you.”
DO IT – I hadn’t studied for years and l felt 9 months of my life was ‘taken over’ but l am so pleased and proud. I feel l can support the patient to achieve their goals. The obesity epidemic is not going away. But the more ‘foot soldiers’ on the ground to support the patients will enable the tables to turn for the better.”

International Nurses Day
May 12th is International Nurses Day. The College of Contemporary Health would like to take this opportunity to thank nurses for all the hard work, commitment and effort they put in every day.
Nurses enable healthy lives and enhance patient well-being on a daily basis. The management of weight and weight related conditions form an integral part of the nursing profession.
As a small token of our appreciation we would like to offer a 10% saving on the innovative online Professional Short Course: Living and Working with Obesity, specifically tailored to the nursing profession. By understanding the obesity crisis, nurses benefit by gaining the confidence and the competence needed to help inspire patients, family, friends and colleagues toward successful weight loss.
This course can be used towards revalidation not only by earning CPD hours but by being an excellent opportunity for a reflective account and a potential source of colleague and patient feedback.
“I have completed the professional short course Living and Working with Obesity, and although I’m not obese, I chose to study the course because I have family members who are obese and I would like to guide and motivate them to adopt a healthy eating lifestyle. I found the course very informative which has motivated me to apply for the Postgraduate Certificate and further improve my knowledge in obesity care.”

London South Bank University (LSBU) has accredited three innovative new online courses in Obesity Care and Management, including the UK’s first completely online Masters degree in the field. The courses are being delivered by the College of Contemporary Health (CCH), which has been pioneering online university-level obesity courses since 2013.
Despite 62% of the UK’s adults being overweight or obese, the UK’s frontline healthcare profession is under-qualified and ill-equipped to deal with increasing numbers of obese patients. CCH’s Masters provides healthcare practitioners with a holistic approach to obesity care, which includes a first-of-its-kind module on obesity and reproductive health.
“Obesity tops the list of major health issues related to 21st century lifestyles. People assume that diet and exercise will sort it out, but they won’t. Our flexible and relevant learning programme addresses the deeper psychological issues and come to grips with obesity’s serious medical consequences,” says Val Bullen, Director of Education at CCH.
Throughout the programme, healthcare professionals gain practical tools and methods which they can immediately apply in their day-to-day interactions with patients.
“From the course so far, I have developed my professional practice by gaining a better understanding of the causes and consequences of obesity. By looking at the behavioural aspects around obesity I am able to relate to my patients and clients better, and provide individualised information, to support each of them through their weight loss journey,” said Rebecca, a Weight Loss Practitioner and CCH Obesity Care and Management student.
CCH is dedicated to training healthcare professionals to deal with health problems related to 21st century lifestyles. The College draws on the latest research and expertise from health education organisations, including LSBU’s School of Health and Social Care, the Association for the Study of Obesity and the National Obesity Forum.
“LSBU has a long tradition of providing excellent education and training for healthcare professionals throughout the UK. Through our partnership with the University, CCH can better provide advanced educational programmes online in obesity care and management, something which, until now, has not been available in the capital,” said John Feenie, CEO at CCH.
