This module will:
Critically review existing prevention and treatment strategies for obesity, ranging from government policy to bariatric surgery, and discuss the reasons for the overall lack of success in tackling the obesity crisis.
The module aims to:
- Provide an understanding of the global challenges of tackling the obesity crisis
- Review the roles of all stakeholders in generating solutions to the obesity epidemic
- Evaluate current obesity prevention and treatment guidelines and strategies
In this module we review the current approaches to obesity prevention and treatment and question whether they can provide a solution to the obesity crisis. We review the evidence for the effectiveness of different prevention and treatment strategies and their implementation under the NHS obesity treatment and referral pathway.
We discuss the reasons for the lack of success of current strategies in the context of the highly complex and interconnected array of influences on eating and physical activity behaviours which underpin obesity, and consider the need for treatment to be personalised, addressing the underlying causes of the individual’s weight gain, their comorbidities, the drivers of their behaviour and barriers to behaviour change.
This module requires a payment of the standard CCH Postgraduate Module fee £1185.
