What You Will Learn
Current approaches to obesity prevention and treatment have largely failed to solve the obesity crisis. You will critically review existing strategies ranging from government policy to bariatric surgery, and examine why success has been so limited.
You will evaluate the evidence for different interventions and explore the need for personalised treatment that addresses underlying causes, comorbidities, and individual barriers to behaviour change.
The module aims to:
- Provide you with an understanding of the global challenges of tackling the obesity crisis
- Enable you to review the roles of all stakeholders in generating solutions to the obesity epidemic
- Support you in evaluating current obesity prevention and treatment guidelines and strategies
You will review current approaches to obesity prevention and treatment and question whether they can provide a solution to the obesity crisis. The evidence for effectiveness of different prevention and treatment strategies is examined, along with their implementation under the NHS obesity treatment and referral pathway.
The module discusses reasons for the lack of success of current strategies in the context of the highly complex and interconnected array of influences on eating and physical activity behaviours which underpin obesity. You will consider the need for treatment to be personalised, addressing the underlying causes of the individual’s weight gain, their comorbidities, the drivers of their behaviour, and barriers to behaviour change.
This module requires a payment of the standard CCH Postgraduate Module fee £985.
