What You Will Learn

Obesity is a complex condition with a wide range of responses to common weight loss programmes. Weight regain often occurs within a few years. You will explore how to predict patient responses to different treatment options and select the most appropriate interventions.

You will develop a more targeted approach to devising interventions for individual patients, moving beyond one-size-fits-all solutions to personalised obesity care that improves patient outcomes.

Aims

The module aims to:

  • Explore the reasons for weight regain, the barriers to sustainable weight loss, and ways to overcome them
  • Enable you to discuss ways to personalise obesity care to achieve the best health outcomes for each individual patient
  • Provide you with an overview of the latest developments in obesity research and their implications for precision treatment of obesity

Module Content

Obesity is a complex condition caused by a wide range of factors, and there is a great variety of responses to common weight loss programmes, with weight regain often occurring within a few years. To achieve better results from obesity treatment, we need to try to predict how individual patients will respond to different treatment options, so that we can select the most appropriate treatment modality. This can be described as a ‘precision approach to obesity’.

Although precision obesity medicine, involving genetic analysis, is still some way off for obesity treatment, practitioners do have the means to make interventions more personalised and improve the patient’s chances of success. You will explore how to develop a more targeted approach to devising interventions for individual patients, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach or leaving it to factors such as availability, cost, and patient or physician preferences, which often determine weight loss treatments at present.

Module Fee

This module requires a payment of the standard CCH Postgraduate Module fee £985.
